The rocky mountains of Montana with glacier carved mountain peaks, crystal clear water and a relaxed mountain vibe is Glacier National Park. There are over 700 miles of hiking trails and numerous alpine lakes and beautiful waterfalls. The water is very refreshing if you enjoy the freezing cold snow melt water after a hike as I do. Driving around the park is also very scenic with plenty of opportunity for capturing magnificent nature photos. Going to the Sun Road is one of the main roads that takes you from Lake McDonald to Logan Pass Visitor Center. This is a must-do drive of on-the-edge drop-offs and endless views. The park is split into different sections: Many Glaciers, Lake McDonald, North Fork and Goat Haunt, St. Mary, and Two Medicine.

One of my favorite mornings was spent at Many Glaciers. We started early in the morning photographing Swiftcurrent Lake. We arrived before dawn and were gifted with a beautiful reflection of the hotel on Swiftcurrent Lake. Soon after we started on an early morning hike we came across a beautiful lake – Fishercap Lake. We sat quietly and enjoyed the quietness of the early morning and all its glory when a moose came out of the trees and walked delicately into the lake. We could have sat for hours watching his magnificence. He  didn’t seem to mind company although we were careful to no get too close. As we continued on our hike we came across Bullhead lake and took advantage of the invigorating water to put our feet in after hours of hiking. We crossed the lake but when we came across bear tracks in the mud we decided we should turn back. We needed a reminder that we are in bear country!

Another one of our favorite hikes was the Highline Trail. The Highline Trail parallels Going to the Sun Road and crosses the Garden Wall. We were lucky enough to be escorted by a ram that stumbled across our hiking group who put himself in the front of the pack and lead us along the trail for a couple miles. This trail leads to Granite Park Chalet with a breathtaking view.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
